Short Description:
Crisis Statement:
There is no tool that integrates estimated unit costs of various commercial, residential, and public buildings in a potential disaster impact area.
Needs Statement:
In Sri Lanka and elsewhere in the SAR region there's a need for a dynamic model that can visualize the financial impact of various flood (or other natural disaster) forecasts. The natural disaster impact data is available; what's missing is a tool that integrates estimate unit costs of various commercial, residential, and public buildings. This could be a visualization tool tied to Inasafe that could, for example, project water flow onto buildings during flodding and illustrate the financial damages. During the hackathon, developers could be asked to adapt an existing tool or build a new tool that enables real estate valuation data, or an asset map, to be layered on top of a hazard map.
Follow-up statement:
The tool could be leveraged by aid organizations or the World Bank in projects to assess and prepare for natural disasters.
